Anointed

Monday Morning Commentary

Yesterday we kicked off our series Essential Oils with the message “Anointed”. Psalm 23:5 declares, “You anoint my head with oil.” What does that mean? Why do I need God to anoint my head with oil.

The picture of Psalm 23 is God being a good shepherd to his sheep. Sheep have flies that fly around their head constantly. Sometimes these flies go up their nose and into their brain. When this happens, the sheep go crazy beating their heads to get the flies out. When a shepherd puts the oil on the sheep the flies are repelled.

The oil of God on our heads keeps us sane and protected. We need protection from the lies of the enemy and the annoyances of life. Anointing oil in the Old Testament was also used to dedicate priests, kings, and prophets to office.

As believers we can be anointed in two ways: internally hearing the call of God on our lives and receiving his supernatural strength and externally having someone prayerfully lay hands on us with oil. Now that Christ has died and risen from the dead all believers are priests, kings, and prophets. The authority of anointing comes from Christ- the ultimately anointed one. We receive this internally and have it confirmed externally by other believers laying hands on us.

Things to remember about God’s anointing:

1. When God appoints me, he anoints me.

2. God’s anointing makes me an empowered person.

3. God’s anointing makes tasks easier.

4. God’s anointing makes the impossible possible.

5. God anoints my life to bless others.

6. For every new challenge I need a new anointing.

7. It is possible to loose the anointing.

How do we receive the anointing? We ask. God does not withhold any good thing from his children.

This week take the time to reflect on these questions:

• Have I ever asked God to anoint me?

• When was the last time I asked for God’s anointing?

If you have asked for the anointing, then think about these questions to further pinpoint the anointing in your life:

• After I spend time with God, what tasks come to me naturally?

• What tasks do I find enjoyable?

• What have people told me impacts them about who I am and what I do?

We all are called to live anointed lives. The only way to quench the anointing is not taking the time to be with God and indulging the flesh. When we live surrendered lives, we live anointed lives. Anointing comes with a price. The only thing more costly in the end is living without God’s empowerment everyday.

It’s never too late to live an anointed life. God longs for you to draw near to him today and receive all he has for you!
